Common Conditions & Procedures

As the most versatile joint in the human body, our shoulder joint provides a tremendous amount of flexibility. However, this range of motion can lead to shoulder pain or discomfort. In most cases, pain in the shoulder can be the result of one of four main causes: inflammation, instability, arthritis, or a fracture. FAQ

What are common causes of shoulder pain?

According to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS), conditions of the shoulder fall into four main categories:

  • Arthritis
  • Fracture
  • Instability
  • Tendon inflammation (bursitis or tendinitis) or tendon tear

What are the surgical treatment options for shoulder pain?

Most shoulder pain can be relieved non-invasively, but for those that need further treatment, they are often resolved with arthroscopic procedures, according to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons(AAOS). The AAOS states that with arthroscopic surgery, a physician may remove scar tissue or repair damaged, worn, or injured tissue.

What is the recovery process after shoulder replacement surgery?

Generally, a patient may regain day-to-day functioning from six to eight weeks after the procedure, according to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS). The outcome may depend on the person’s overall level of activity at the time of the procedure, the AAOS states.
